About FrameReady

FrameReady is a browser-based tool that turns one artwork or photo into exact print sizes, at 300 DPI when the image has the pixels. All image processing runs on your device; nothing is uploaded. It is made by Paperkiln Studio, an independent software studio in Canada that builds small, privacy-first tools for artists, makers and anyone who prints.

Who makes FrameReady?

Paperkiln Studio is an independent software studio in Canada that builds small, privacy-first tools for artists, makers and anyone who prints. FrameReady is designed, built and run by the studio. The site shows no ads, and because files never leave your device there is no account system or file database behind it.

Why does FrameReady exist?

A print only looks right when the file matches the frame. Frames come in a handful of shapes — 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14 and the international A-series — so one artwork listed for sale needs several files, each with enough pixels for 300 DPI and small enough for Etsy's upload limits. Doing that by hand in an image editor is slow and easy to get wrong. FrameReady does it in one pass, and Photo to Frame applies the same maths to a single photo and a single frame.

How does FrameReady work without uploading files?

Your image is read, cropped, resampled (Lanczos3, in a Web Worker), encoded as JPG or PNG with DPI metadata, zipped and turned into PDFs entirely inside your browser tab. iPhone HEIC photos are converted by a WebAssembly decoder served from this site. There is no server that receives images.

The only requests that leave your device are the pages themselves, anonymous usage events (no cookies), and — only if you buy or activate Pro — your purchase and a license-key check. The privacy notice lists exactly what is sent.

How are the print sizes calculated?

  • Inch sizes: pixels = inches × 300, rounded. An 8 × 10 in print is 2,400 × 3,000 px.
  • A-sizes (ISO 216): millimetres ÷ 25.4 × 300, rounded. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is 2,480 × 3,508 px and A1 is 7,016 × 9,933 px.
  • Cropping: when shapes differ, the share removed is 1 − (narrower short/long ratio ÷ wider short/long ratio), taken from the top and bottom or from the sides. A 3:4 phone photo in an 8 × 10 frame loses about 6% from the top and bottom.
  • Quality badges: "Print-ready" means at least 294 effective DPI at the chosen size; "Enlarged" means 150–293 (a little softer up close); below 150 (more than 2× enlargement) is "Too small".
  • Etsy limits: up to 5 files per digital listing, each 20 MB or smaller, per the Etsy Help Center (checked October 2026).

How are the sizes tested?

Every size table on this site is generated from the same data file the tool uses, so a page and an export can't disagree. Automated tests check the pixel dimensions of every preset, the DPI written into JPG and PNG files, that ZIPs stay under Etsy's 20 MB limit, and that print-at-home pages place each photo at its exact physical size inside the printer margins. See the print size chart for every size in one table.

Is FrameReady free?

Yes. Free covers every ratio, crop previews, Etsy-safe ZIPs and exports up to 3,600 px on the long side, with no watermark and no account. Pro is a one-time $19 — no subscription — for full size up to 24 × 36 in, batch export and the buyer documents, and full-size photo prints at every frame size. Compare plans.
