Which frame size do you need?
Each size has its own page with the exact pixels, how much of a phone photo gets cropped, and which frames and mats it fits. Every size side by side: the print size chart.
Why does a photo need cropping to fit a frame?
Photos and frames come in different shapes. When the shapes don't match, something has to give: either a little is trimmed from the edges so the photo fills the frame, or the whole photo is kept and a border fills the gap.
- Phone photos are 3:4 (or 4:3 sideways).
- Screenshots and video stills are 9:16.
- Camera photos are 2:3.
- Frames are 2:3 (4×6, 10×15 cm), 5:7, 4:5 (8×10, 40×50 cm), 3:4 (30×40 cm), 11:14, 1:1, A sizes and more.
So a phone photo in an 8x10 frame loses a sliver from the top and bottom, and in a 4x6 frame it loses a bit more. With Crop to fill you choose what stays; with Fit whole photo nothing is cut and you pick a white, black or softly blurred border.
Sharpness depends on pixels: about 300 per inch looks crisp up close, and down to about 150 per inch is fine for something you see from across the room — see DPI explained. To print at home at the exact size, read how to print photos at actual size.
Frequently asked questions about resizing photos for frames
How do I resize a photo to fit a frame?
Pick your frame size, add your photo, then drag the photo (or use the arrow buttons) to choose what's in the frame. Download the photo file for a photo shop or online print service, or the print-at-home page to print it at exactly the right size on your own printer.
Why does my photo need cropping?
Phones take photos in a 3:4 shape, but frames come in other shapes — 4×6 is 2:3, 8×10 is 4:5, 5×7 is 5:7. When the shapes don't match, a little has to be trimmed off the edges. If you'd rather keep the whole photo, choose "Fit whole photo" and it gets a white, black or soft blurred border instead.
How many pixels do I need to print a photo?
About 300 pixels per inch for a print that looks sharp up close, so an 8×10 wants 2,400 × 3,000 pixels. Down to about 150 per inch is fine for something you look at from across the room. FrameReady tells you in plain words how your photo will look at the size you pick.
Can I use iPhone (HEIC) photos?
Yes — drop them in as they are, no need to convert them first. HEIC photos from iPhones and Macs are converted right in your browser at full resolution and the right way up, so nothing is uploaded. Very large photos (48 MP) can take a few seconds.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It's free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Your photo never leaves your device: everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How do I print at the right size at home?
Download the print-at-home page (letter or A4). It places your photo at its exact size with cut marks and a small bar to measure, so you can check the size came out right. In the print dialog choose 100% or "Actual size" — not "Fit to page", which shrinks it. If your frame is as big as the paper (A4 on A4), you can print borderless or slightly smaller to fit the printer's margins.
How many pixels is a 5x7 photo?
1,500 × 2,100 pixels at 300 DPI, which is sharp up close. 750 × 1,050 (150 DPI) is about the lowest for a decent print. In centimetres a 5x7 is 12.7 × 17.8 cm.
What resolution do I need for a 16x20 print?
4,800 × 6,000 pixels for 300 DPI. 2,400 × 3,000 (150 DPI) is fine for a print you view from across the room. A 12-megapixel phone photo (4,032 × 3,024) gives about 189 DPI at 16x20 once it's cropped to the 4:5 shape.
How do I print 4x6 photos on 8.5x11 paper?
Three 4x6 photos fit on one US Letter sheet (two side by side and one turned sideways) inside a 0.25 in printer margin; 2 fit on A4. Download the print-at-home page with "Fill the page" ticked, then print at 100% or "Actual size", not "Fit to page".
What aspect ratio is an 8x10?
4:5. A typical phone photo is 3:4, so about 6% is trimmed from the top and bottom to fill an 8x10. Choose "Fit whole photo" to keep everything and add a border instead.
What is 8x10 in centimetres?
20.3 × 25.4 cm. The closest metric frame is 20 × 25 cm; A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) is a different, longer shape.
