Add your photo, choose what stays in the frame, and download an A4 file or a page to print at home. An A4 print needs 2,480 × 3,508 pixels at 300 DPI.

Frame size

The everyday paper size outside North America — prints, certificates and small posters. A4 is a 1:√2 shape, so a typical phone photo (3:4) loses about 6% from the sides. On A4 paper it prints at 93% with a thin white edge, or full size on a borderless printer.

How many pixels is an A4 photo?

Pixels per inch decide how sharp a print looks. Here's what an A4 print needs (portrait; swap the numbers for landscape). Pixels = inches × DPI.

A4 print in pixels at 300, 240, 150 and 72 DPI
DPIPixelsMegapixelsHow it looks
3002,480 × 3,5088.7Sharp, even up close
2401,984 × 2,8065.6Good — a little softer up close
1501,240 × 1,7542.2Lowest we'd go — fine from across the room
72595 × 8420.5Screen only — too low to print

Will a phone photo fit an A4 frame?

A4 is a 1:√2 shape. Here's roughly how much is trimmed when a photo fills the frame (turned the same way as the frame). Prefer to keep everything? Choose Fit whole photo and add a border instead.

Phone photo (3:4)Trims about 6% from the sides
Camera photo (2:3)Trims about 6% from the top and bottom

Which frames and mats fit an A4 print?

Fits an A4 frame (21 × 29.7 cm), or an A3 or 30 × 40 cm frame with an A4 mount.

Mat openings are usually about ¼ in (6 mm) smaller than the print on each side, so the edges tuck behind the mat — keep faces and words away from the very edge. The tool shows that strip as a dashed line.

Frequently asked questions about A4 prints

What size should a photo be for an A4 frame?

For a print that's sharp even up close, 2,480 × 3,508 pixels — that's 300 DPI. At 1,984 × 2,806 (240 DPI) it's still a good print, a little softer up close, and 1,240 × 1,754 (150 DPI) is the lowest we'd go — fine from across the room. FrameReady makes the file at the right size for you.

Will my phone photo fit an A4 frame?

Most phone photos are 3:4, so about 6% is trimmed from the sides to fill an A4 frame. Drag the photo to choose what stays, or pick "Fit whole photo" to keep everything and add a border instead.

Can I print A4 at home?

Almost: A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) is about as big as a sheet of paper, and most home printers leave a thin unprinted edge. The print-at-home page can print it on A4 paper full size if your printer has a borderless setting, or at 93% with a thin white edge (fine behind a mat); on Letter paper at 89% with a thin white edge (fine behind a mat). For an exact print without fuss, use a photo shop or online print service.

Is it really free and private?

Yes. Your photo never leaves your device — everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no sign-up and no watermark.

Is A4 the same as letter size?

Close, but no: A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm (8.3 × 11.7 in), a little narrower and taller than US letter (8.5 × 11 in). Pick the size that matches your frame — FrameReady sizes the file exactly.

What is A4 in centimetres and millimetres?

A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm (210 × 297 mm), or 8.3 × 11.7 in. Frames are sold by exact size, so match the frame's label rather than a near metric equivalent.
