Letter-paper size — certificates, kids' drawings, recipes and documents you want to frame. 8.5x11 is a 17:22 shape, so a typical phone photo (3:4) loses about 3% from the top and bottom. On US Letter paper it prints at 93% with a thin white edge, or full size on a borderless printer.
How many pixels is an 8.5x11 photo?
Pixels per inch decide how sharp a print looks. Here's what an 8.5×11 print needs (portrait; swap the numbers for landscape). Pixels = inches × DPI.
| DPI | Pixels | Megapixels | How it looks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 | 2,550 × 3,300 | 8.4 | Sharp, even up close |
| 240 | 2,040 × 2,640 | 5.4 | Good — a little softer up close |
| 150 | 1,275 × 1,650 | 2.1 | Lowest we'd go — fine from across the room |
| 72 | 612 × 792 | 0.5 | Screen only — too low to print |
Will a phone photo fit an 8.5x11 frame?
8.5×11 is a 17:22 shape. Here's roughly how much is trimmed when a photo fills the frame (turned the same way as the frame). Prefer to keep everything? Choose Fit whole photo and add a border instead.
| Your photo | In an 8.5×11 frame |
|---|---|
| Phone photo (3:4) | Trims about 3% from the top and bottom |
| Camera photo (2:3) | Trims about 14% from the top and bottom |
| Screenshot or video still (9:16) | Trims about 27% from the top and bottom |
| Square photo (1:1) | Trims about 23% from the sides |
Which frames and mats fit an 8.5x11 print?
Fits a document or certificate frame (8.5×11), or an 11×14 frame with an 8.5×11 mat opening.
Mat openings are usually about ¼ in (6 mm) smaller than the print on each side, so the edges tuck behind the mat — keep faces and words away from the very edge. The tool shows that strip as a dashed line.

Frequently asked questions about 8.5x11 prints
What size should a photo be for an 8.5×11 frame?
For a print that's sharp even up close, 2,550 × 3,300 pixels — that's 300 DPI. At 2,040 × 2,640 (240 DPI) it's still a good print, a little softer up close, and 1,275 × 1,650 (150 DPI) is the lowest we'd go — fine from across the room. FrameReady makes the file at the right size for you.
Will my phone photo fit an 8.5×11 frame?
Most phone photos are 3:4, so about 3% is trimmed from the top and bottom to fill an 8.5×11 frame. Drag the photo to choose what stays, or pick "Fit whole photo" to keep everything and add a border instead.
Can I print 8.5×11 at home?
Almost: 8.5 × 11 in is about as big as a sheet of paper, and most home printers leave a thin unprinted edge. The print-at-home page can print it on Letter paper full size if your printer has a borderless setting, or at 93% with a thin white edge (fine behind a mat); on A4 paper at 91% with a thin white edge (fine behind a mat). For an exact print without fuss, use a photo shop or online print service.
Is it really free and private?
Yes. Your photo never leaves your device — everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no sign-up and no watermark.
Why can't I print 8.5×11 at home at full size?
Most home printers leave a thin unprinted edge, so a full 8.5×11 image can't fit inside the margins of an 8.5×11 sheet. The print-at-home page gives you two ways: “Borderless printer (no margins)” for printers with a borderless setting, or “Fit to printable area”, which prints it a few percent smaller with a thin white edge. For an exact print without fuss, use a print shop.
What is 8.5x11 in centimetres and millimetres?
8.5x11 inches is 21.6 × 27.9 cm (216 × 279 mm). Frames are sold by exact size, so match the frame's label rather than a near metric equivalent.
