Ratio guide

1:1 ratio print sizes

1:1 print sizes are 4 × 4, 5 × 5, 6 × 6, 8 × 8, 10 × 10, 12 × 12, 16 × 16 and 20 × 20 in; at 300 DPI the largest, 20 × 20 in, needs 6000 × 6000 px.

Square prints suit gallery walls, record-sleeve frames and Instagram-style sets. A 1:1 file is optional for most listings and essential for a square design.

What sizes are 1:1?

Every size below has the same shape, so one file at 20 × 20 in (6000 × 6000 px) prints correctly at all of them. Pixel dimensions are inches × 300.

What is the 1:1 ratio used for?

Square designs, pattern tiles, album-style art and triptych sets where three equal squares hang together. Square frames are widely sold in 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20 in.

Which frames fit a 1:1 print?

Square frames in 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20 in; 10 × 10 cm, 20 × 20 cm, 30 × 30 cm and 50 × 50 cm in metric ranges. Record-sleeve frames (12.5 in) display a 12 × 12 print with a thin border.

How much is cropped when you convert art to 1:1?

Squares crop heavily from any portrait ratio: a third of the height from 2:3, a quarter from 3:4, a fifth from 4:5. Use "Fit + pad" if the composition can't spare it.

In FrameReady, drag the photo to choose what's in the 1:1 frame (or use the arrow buttons), or switch that ratio to "Fit + pad" to keep the whole image.

What resolution do you need for a 20 × 20 in print?

To be print-ready at 20 × 20 in without upscaling, your source needs at least 6000 × 6000 px after cropping to 1:1. The absolute floor (150 DPI) is 3000 × 3000 px. More on this in DPI explained. Below that, drop to the next size down rather than ship a soft file.
