Add your photo, choose what stays in the frame, and download a 4×6 file or a page to print at home. A 4x6 print needs 1,200 × 1,800 pixels at 300 DPI.

Frame size

The classic photo-print size — desk frames, albums, fridge doors and thank-you notes. 4x6 is a 2:3 shape, so a typical phone photo (3:4) loses about 11% from the sides. It prints at actual size at home, 3 per US Letter sheet or 2 per A4 sheet.

How many pixels is a 4x6 photo?

Pixels per inch decide how sharp a print looks. Here's what a 4×6 print needs (portrait; swap the numbers for landscape). Pixels = inches × DPI.

4×6 print in pixels at 300, 240, 150 and 72 DPI
DPIPixelsMegapixelsHow it looks
3001,200 × 1,8002.2Sharp, even up close
240960 × 1,4401.4Good — a little softer up close
150600 × 9000.5Lowest we'd go — fine from across the room
72288 × 4320.1Screen only — too low to print

Will a phone photo fit a 4x6 frame?

4×6 is a 2:3 shape. Here's roughly how much is trimmed when a photo fills the frame (turned the same way as the frame). Prefer to keep everything? Choose Fit whole photo and add a border instead.

How much of common photo shapes is cropped in a 4×6 frame
Your photoIn a 4×6 frame
Phone photo (3:4)Trims about 11% from the sides
Camera photo (2:3)Fits exactly — nothing is cropped
Screenshot or video still (9:16)Trims about 16% from the top and bottom
Square photo (1:1)Trims about 33% from the sides

Which frames and mats fit a 4x6 print?

Fits a 4×6 frame, or a 5×7 frame with a 4×6 mat opening for a little breathing room.

Mat openings are usually about ¼ in (6 mm) smaller than the print on each side, so the edges tuck behind the mat — keep faces and words away from the very edge. The tool shows that strip as a dashed line.

Frequently asked questions about 4x6 prints

What size should a photo be for a 4×6 frame?

For a print that's sharp even up close, 1,200 × 1,800 pixels — that's 300 DPI. At 960 × 1,440 (240 DPI) it's still a good print, a little softer up close, and 600 × 900 (150 DPI) is the lowest we'd go — fine from across the room. FrameReady makes the file at the right size for you.

Will my phone photo fit a 4×6 frame?

Most phone photos are 3:4, so about 11% is trimmed from the sides to fill a 4×6 frame. Drag the photo to choose what stays, or pick "Fit whole photo" to keep everything and add a border instead.

Can I print 4×6 at home?

Yes. Download the print-at-home page: your photo is placed at exactly 4 × 6 in (10.2 × 15.2 cm) on Letter and A4 paper, with cut marks and a bar you can measure to check the size. Tick "Fill the page" to get 3 on Letter or 2 on A4. Print at 100% (“Actual size”), not “Fit to page”.

Is it really free and private?

Yes. Your photo never leaves your device — everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's no sign-up and no watermark.

What is 4x6 in centimetres and millimetres?

4x6 inches is 10.2 × 15.2 cm (102 × 152 mm). Frames are sold by exact size, so match the frame's label rather than a near metric equivalent.
